Emergency Plumber Now, or a Regular Appointment Tomorrow?

plumberatlanta.net

Call for after-hours help when water or sewage keeps coming and you cannot stop it, when the house is left without water or a working toilet, or when a water heater tank itself is leaking. If a valve stops the problem and the household can manage overnight, waiting for regular hours usually saves a lot of money. A gas smell is not a plumbing call at all: leave the house, then call 911 and the gas utility from outside.

If a valve stops the problem and the household can manage overnight, waiting for regular hours usually saves a lot of money. The one-question test

Ask yourself: if I close a valve, does the problem stop, and can we live with that until morning? If both answers are yes, it can almost always wait. If water keeps coming, sewage keeps rising, or shutting things off leaves the house unusable, it probably cannot.

The clock matters because of mold. The EPA says water-damaged areas and items should be dried within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. A leak that runs under a floor all night, or a long weekend waiting for a Tuesday slot, can use up most of that window.

Situations that justify a night or weekend call

ProblemWhy it can't wait
Pipe spraying or a ceiling dripping, and no valve stops itDamage grows every minute
Sewage rising in a tub, shower or floor drainHealth risk, and every flush adds to it
Water heater leaking from the tank bodyTanks do not reseal; it only gets worse
No water at all while neighbors have waterLikely a break on your side of the meter
The only toilet in the house is out of serviceThe home is not livable without it
No heat for water during a freeze with vulnerable people at homeSafety, not comfort

For a broken pipe, work through our burst pipe checklist while you wait. A leaking tank usually ends in a new water heater rather than a repair, and our repair-or-replace guide explains why.

Problems that can usually sit until business hours

  • A dripping faucet or a toilet that keeps running (close its stop valve overnight)
  • One clogged sink or tub while the rest of the drains work
  • A garbage disposal that hums or jams
  • Low flow at one fixture
  • A slow leak under a sink once its shutoff is closed
  • Lukewarm water from a heater that is not leaking

These are good weekday jobs. A single slow line is a routine drain clearing visit, a constantly running tank is simple toilet work, and weak flow is covered in our guide to sorting out poor water pressure.

First moves before you pick up the phone

  1. Shut the nearest valve. Toilets and sinks usually have one behind or below them. If not, close the main where the supply line enters the house, often in a basement, crawl space, garage wall or near the water heater.
  2. Keep away from wet wiring. Turn off breakers for affected areas only if you can reach the panel without standing in water.
  3. Turn the water heater off or to vacation if the main will stay closed for long.
  4. Open a low faucet to drain pressure from the lines.
  5. Stop using drains if anything is backing up.
  6. Mop, vacuum and photograph. Pictures help the plumber plan and support an insurance claim.

Then look again. A pipe that was spraying but is quiet with the main closed may be fine until morning if the family can do without water. A drain that sends sewage up every time a sink runs is not.

Is the utility the one to call?

Before paying after-hours rates, check whether the problem is on the public side. Ask a neighbor. If their water is out or weak too, a main break or system work is the likely cause, and the utility has to fix it. Throughout the metro, the utility owns the line up to the meter and the homeowner owns everything from the meter to the house, so a break in the street or at the meter is theirs.

Water providerWhere to report a break or outage
City of Atlanta (Watershed Management)ATL 311, or 404-546-0311 after hours
DeKalb County Watershed Management770-270-6243 (emergency repair)
Gwinnett County Water Resources678.376.7000 (dispatch)
Cobb County Water System770-419-6201 (emergencies)
Clayton County Water Authority770-960-5200
Fulton County Water Services (north Fulton)770-640-3040

Many cities run their own systems, so check your water bill for the right number. If sewage is backing up only in your home, the blockage is usually in your own lateral, and a sewer camera will find it once the line is cleared.

What to tell the person who answers

A clear description gets the right help faster and avoids a second trip. Before you call, have this ready:

  • What is leaking or backing up, and roughly where in the house
  • Whether you were able to stop it, and which valve you closed
  • Whether the house is on a slab, a crawl space or a basement
  • The age and type of water heater, if it is involved
  • Whether anyone in the home is elderly, very young or medically fragile
  • Any access issues, such as a locked crawl space hatch, a gate code or a dog in the yard

Say so if the house gets water from a private well. Some homes in more rural parts of the metro, such as areas of Milton, get water privately rather than from Fulton County, and on a well there is no utility to call: if the pump stops, every tap and toilet stops with it, which can make a dead pump a reasonable after-hours call in a freeze.

A few minutes now saves a bad night later

Most of the damage in a plumbing emergency happens in the minutes spent looking for a shutoff. On a calm day, find the main valve, make sure it turns, and show everyone in the household where it is. Tag the stop valves under sinks and behind toilets. Know where the water heater's cold inlet valve is and how to switch the heater off. If the main is a corroded gate valve that will not budge, having it replaced during a routine visit beats discovering it is seized while a pipe is spraying.

If you smell gas

Do not call a plumber first, and do not flip switches, use a lighter or hunt for the leak. Atlanta Gas Light's safety advice is to leave right away, warn others, avoid anything that could spark, and use a phone only once you are a safe distance away. From there, call 911 and then Atlanta Gas Light at 877.427.4321. Some cities, such as Austell, Buford, Sugar Hill, Lawrenceville and Cartersville, run their own gas systems; the company that owns the pipes is shown on your gas bill. Georgia's market is deregulated, so the marketer that sells you gas is not the one that responds to leaks. After the utility or fire department makes the house safe, a plumber can repair house piping or appliance connections. Our gas odor guide has the full steps.

What an after-hours visit tends to cost

Angi's emergency plumber cost guide, updated in September 2026, puts the national average around $170 an hour, with most people paying $100 to $500 an hour and holiday or late-night work reaching $600. It says emergency plumbers typically charge 1.5 to 3 times standard rates: about 1.5 times on weekday evenings, up to twice on weekends and up to three times on holidays. Many add a flat emergency or trip fee of roughly $150 to $300.

The same guide lists national ranges for common emergency jobs: about $150 to $5,000 for a burst pipe, $1,325 to $5,000 for a main sewer line clog, $225 to $975 for a water heater repair and $150 to $375 for a toilet. Local conditions shift those numbers; our metro Atlanta price guide adds context.

Ask before anyone heads your way

  • Is there a trip or after-hours fee, and is it credited toward the work?
  • Hourly or flat price, and when does the regular rate resume?
  • Can a temporary fix tonight be followed by the full repair at normal rates?
  • Will I get a price before work starts?

If it truly cannot wait, you can be connected with an emergency plumber in Atlanta or one nearer to you, such as an after-hours plumber in Lawrenceville.

Frequently asked questions

Is a clogged drain an emergency?
Usually not. One slow or clogged drain while others work can wait for a regular appointment. It becomes urgent when sewage comes up through tubs or floor drains, or when every drain in the house is backing up.
Who do I call if the water is out on my whole street?
Call the water utility rather than a plumber. In the City of Atlanta that is ATL 311 or 404-546-0311. DeKalb's emergency repair line is 770-270-6243, Gwinnett's dispatch is 678.376.7000, Cobb's emergency line is 770-419-6201 and Clayton County Water Authority is 770-960-5200.
How much more does a plumber charge at night or on weekends?
Angi's 2026 guide says emergency rates often run 1.5 to 3 times normal, with weekends up to about double and holidays up to triple, and many companies add a trip fee of about $150 to $300. Ask how billing works before the visit.
