Most everyday plumbing repairs in Atlanta fall between about $100 and $335, according to local quotes gathered by This Old House (updated 2024). Bigger jobs such as a water heater swap or a burst pipe run well past that, and HomeGuide's 2026 guides show nights, weekends and holidays adding a surcharge on top of normal hourly labor.
What makes up a plumbing bill?
Almost every invoice from an Atlanta-area plumber is built from the same four pieces, even when the plumber quotes one flat number:
- The visit itself. Many shops charge a service call or trip fee just for showing up and diagnosing the problem. HomeGuide's 2026 plumber cost guide puts typical service call fees at $50 to $200, often covering the first hour. Some companies also add a mileage charge once a job is far from their shop, which matters if you live out toward Canton or Griffin and the closest plumber is based inside the Perimeter.
- Labor. HomeGuide lists general plumber labor at $45 to $150 an hour nationally, with a master plumber billing more than an apprentice.
- Parts and materials. A wax ring costs little; a gas control valve or a section of pipe costs much more. Ask whether parts are marked up and whether you can see the part before it goes in.
- Permits and disposal. Water heater replacements, new piping and gas work usually involve a permit and sometimes a haul-away fee for the old equipment.
Many companies now quote flat prices by the job instead of by the hour. That protects you from a slow worker but can hide a large margin on quick fixes, so it helps to know the going range before you agree.
What do common Atlanta repairs cost?
This Old House asked Atlanta plumbers for quotes and published average figures by repair type. HomeGuide's national 2026 ranges are shown alongside so you can see how wide the spread really is. Treat both as a starting point, not a promise.
| Job | Atlanta average (This Old House, 2024) | National range (HomeGuide, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Toilet repair | $264 | $100 to $300 |
| Garbage disposal repair | $264 | $160 to $685 (unclogging) |
| Clearing a clog or snaking a drain | $396 | $100 to $275 |
| Leaking pipe | $396 | $150 to $850 |
| Gas line repair | $528 | $100 to $250 |
| Water heater repair | $594 | $150 to $700 |
| Water heater installation | $1,718 | See the water heater section below |
| Burst pipe | $3,304 | $500 to $5,000 (emergency guide) |
The gaps between columns are not errors. A local average blends easy and hard jobs, while a national range shows the floor and ceiling. A clog in a kitchen sink is a different job from roots in the main line, and a gas repair on an exposed pipe in a basement is not the same as one inside a wall.
How much more is an after-hours call?
Timing changes the price more than almost anything else. HomeGuide's 2026 emergency plumber guide gives these hourly ranges, before any call-out surcharge:
- Same-day emergency during business hours: $100 to $200 an hour
- Weekday evening or night: $120 to $300 an hour
- Weekend: $150 to $350 an hour
- Holiday: $200 to $450 or more an hour
The same guide says most emergency plumbers add a $150 to $250 surcharge for visits outside business hours. If water is coming through a ceiling, that premium is worth paying. If one bathroom sink is slow and others work, it usually is not. Our guide on whether to call tonight or wait until morning walks through the difference, and you can reach an emergency plumber in Atlanta when the answer is now.
A practical way to keep an overnight bill down: find your main shutoff before you need it. In the City of Atlanta, the Department of Watershed Management owns the line from the main to the meter, and the homeowner owns the line from the meter to the house. Closing the valve on your side can turn a midnight emergency into a next-morning appointment.
Do permits add to the price in metro Atlanta?
Sometimes, and the rules depend on which city or county you live in. Inside Atlanta city limits, the Office of Buildings treats plumbing work on one- and two-family homes as a technical permit that needs no plan review and is applied for online. Austell's permit page says a plumbing permit is required to install, remove, alter or replace plumbing, gas or drain piping, fixtures or water heating equipment. Other cities and the unincorporated parts of Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett and Clayton counties each run their own offices.
HomeGuide's plumber guide says permits generally cost $30 to $500 and that routine repairs often do not need one, while new piping, opened walls and changes to the system usually do. Its water heater guide lists $50 to $200 for a heater permit. A quote that leaves the permit out to look smaller is not a better deal, since unpermitted work can surface when you sell the house.
Which jobs push a bill into four figures?
A handful of problems account for most large plumbing bills in metro Atlanta homes:
- Water heaters. HomeGuide's 2026 installation guide puts a standard tank at $600 to $3,100 installed and tankless at $1,400 to $5,600. Our repair-or-replace guide for water heaters covers when to stop fixing an old one.
- Sewer lines. HomeGuide lists sewer main line repair at $1,880 to $3,700 and a camera inspection at $125 to $500. A camera inspection of the sewer line before any digging tells you whether you face a spot repair or a longer section.
- Hidden leaks. A leak under a slab or behind finished walls adds detection and access costs. HomeGuide's ceiling leak range is $700 to $3,000. Professional leak detection narrows where to open up.
- Water main repair. HomeGuide puts water main repair at $400 to $1,500. Because the stretch from the meter to the house belongs to the owner, that bill is yours, not the utility's.
Older housing raises the odds of these bigger repairs. In older Atlanta neighborhoods, galvanized steel or aging drain lines can turn a simple repair into a partial repipe of the house.
Does it cost more in the suburbs than in the city?
No public source tracks plumber prices separately for Marietta, Lawrenceville or Peachtree City, so be wary of any page that claims precise town-by-town numbers. What does change by address is travel distance, which can trigger mileage charges, and the permit rules of your city or county. Homes farther out on private wells also bring well pump work into the picture, which HomeGuide prices at $500 to $1,000 for repair. If you live in Cobb County, plumbers serving the Marietta area will often know the local permit office already.
How do you get a fair price?
- Describe the problem precisely. Note when it started, which fixtures are affected and whether it is getting worse. A clear description helps a plumber give a closer phone estimate.
- Ask how the visit is billed. Is there a trip fee? Does it apply to the repair? Is the price flat or hourly?
- Get large jobs in writing. For anything over a few hundred dollars, ask for a written quote that lists parts, labor, permit and disposal.
- Get a second quote on big work. For a sewer line, repipe or water heater, a second opinion is normal and rarely offends a good plumber.
- Bundle small jobs. If a plumber is already coming for a running toilet, ask about the dripping faucet too. You pay the trip fee once.

What if you smell gas?
Do not wait for a plumber or worry about cost. Leave the house first, then call 911 and your gas utility from a safe place. Across most of metro Atlanta that is Atlanta Gas Light, whose emergency line is 877.427.4321. A few cities, including Austell, Buford, Sugar Hill, Lawrenceville and Cartersville, run their own gas systems, and the pipe utility is named on your gas bill. Georgia's gas market is deregulated, so the marketer that sells you gas is not the company that handles leaks. Once the utility has made the line safe, a plumber who does gas line work can handle repairs on the house side.
