Lilburn's water and sewer are operated by Gwinnett County's Department of Water Resources, but the City of Lilburn issues its own building permits covering plumbing and gas connections. Plumber Atlanta is a referral number at no cost to callers and does not employ plumbers. Call the number on this page to be connected with a local plumber in Lilburn.

Plumbing services in Lilburn
Small town, big difference
That is Lilburn's motto. The town started as a railroad stop in 1890, was incorporated in 1910, and has since revitalized Old Town Lilburn. Lilburn City Park and the Lilburn Greenway Trail are local favorites. U.S. 29, Lawrenceville Highway, is the main road, and the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is one of the area's best-known landmarks. The city is in southern Gwinnett County, about 17 miles from downtown Atlanta, with 14,502 residents in 2020.
Homes built in the 1980s, and what that means
Lilburn's median home was built in 1988, and about a quarter are older than 1980. Houses from the late 1970s and 1980s have now had their plumbing in service for 35 to 45 years. That is when original water heaters have long since been replaced once or twice, but the supply piping, shutoff valves, tub and shower valves, and the sewer lateral under the yard are original and starting to show their age. Pinhole leaks, sticky valves and recurring slow drains are frequent complaints.
Gwinnett County handles water and sewer
Under a 2018 agreement among Gwinnett County, its Water and Sewerage Authority and the city, Gwinnett operates water and sewer service for the Lilburn area. Water is drawn from Lake Lanier and treated at the Shoal Creek and Lanier plants with chlorine. Gwinnett lists the water's hardness at roughly 1 to 2 grains per gallon, which is soft. Its annual report covers the rest of the test data.
Gwinnett is responsible for the pipes up to the meter. Everything between the meter and the home, including fixtures, is the homeowner's. Gwinnett's 24-hour dispatch line, 678.376.7000, is for problems on the county side.
City permits
The City of Lilburn's Planning and Business Services issues building permits. Its application lists plumbing and mechanical among the included trades and has a box for utility power and gas connections. The office is at (770) 921-2210.
Gas leaks
The city partners with Gas South as a marketer, but Atlanta Gas Light delivers the gas and maintains the pipes. If you smell gas, leave the house first, then call 911 and AGL at 877.427.4321 from outside. If your gas bill comes from the City of Lawrenceville instead, its emergency line is 770-963-3332.
Different from Atlanta, and what to expect
Atlanta homes drink Chattahoochee water from the city's own plants; Lilburn's comes from Lake Lanier through Gwinnett County. Permits go to Lilburn City Hall rather than Atlanta's Office of Buildings. When you call, say what you see and where. You will be connected with an independent plumber who works in Lilburn, who then sets price and timing with you.
